Open Call for applications to Modern Fuel Board of Directors

Screen Shot 2015-05-21 at 9.21.20 AM

Modern Fuel is seeking candidates who are passionate about contemporary visual, time-based and interdisciplinary arts, and are excited to offer leadership and insight as members of the Board of Directors. Volunteering with the Board offers the opportunity to gain understanding and experience with an artist-run centre, as well as various occasions to engage critically and socially with the arts community in Kingston. Board positions are for 2 year terms, with the exception of the student position of 1 year.

The role of board members is to provide active leadership, stewardship, direction, and assistance to Modern Fuel Artist Run Centre in accordance with Modern Fuel’s mission and mandate.

In addition to the other board officers positions we have available, we need a student representative. This s a unique opportunity within the board structure. It allows us to foster relationships with post secondary arts oriented institutions and gives students opportunities to see the world of art from an industry perspective.

Roles and Responsibility of Board Members:

+ All members of the Board of Directors must be members of Modern Fuel in good standing as per the Modern Fuel bylaws.

+ Board members are elected by members at the Annual General Meeting, and serve a two-year term. The Board, by majority vote, may fill vacancies that occur between AGMs due to resignation or removal from office of elected directors. Board members cannot serve more than three consecutive terms.

+ Attending board meetings. They are currently held once a month on the third Wednesday, starting at 7 pm. Board Members should read the material provided before each meeting (minutes, agenda), and pass on any items to be added to the agenda to the Secretary in a timely manner. According to the bylaws, board members who miss three consecutive board meetings shall be deemed to have resigned from office.

+ Board members are asked to sit on two committees. Time commitment can fluctuate between approximately 5-15 hours/month.

+ Volunteering in at least one aspect of fundraising (as needed by the committee), and receiving charity bingo training.

+Participating in at least four events a year (openings, workshops, screenings) is encouraged.

+ Preparing for and attending the Annual General Meeting.

Please email Phoebe Cohoe at with your letter of interest and CV by May 30th A nominations committee will review all applications.

Our AGM is scheduled for Wednesday June 17th at 7pm at Modern Fuel in the Tett Centre (Suite 305, 370 King St. W.)

Now this just in from Kaaren & Julian Brown…..

We would like to share this poster for a June 7th recital in Kingston featuring Nils Brown and organist / pianist Matthew Larkin, sponsored by Olivea Restaurant, the Chef of which is Stev George. All of these men grew up in Kingston!

A hip after-party at Olivea follows the show. Nils will bring his guitar and continue to sing your favourite Neapolitan and Venetian songs long into the evening. The food at Olivea is just extraordinary! (Don’t forget to reserve – 613.547.5483.)

Here is to the Winners… Congratulation to Kingston Arts and Letters Club Member, Screen Shot 2014-11-02 at 11.44.13 PM
Liz Schell
on her successful bid to return to  Kingston City Council.

It is time to cheer the victories and celebrate the accomplishments during the November 11, 2014 Kingston Arts and Letters Meeting.

Liz, an artist herself,  has championed art causes over many years prior to her first elected Kingston City Council position and continued to support Arts Community interest over the broad spectrum during her first term.

We are delighted to have Liz share her vision of how the arts community will look with the new city council from her dedicated artist and leadership perspective.

Fa la la la la…..turn on your thinking caps! December is your Holiday gathering to cheer the sentiments of the season and close out the old year. Carolyn & Michele cannot do it without your help to make it happen.

We are taking offers for music and entertainment for the December 9th Christmas/Chanukah/Kwanza et all … party, it won’t happen without you.

So dust off your instruments, brush up your party piece, write new lyrics and practice, practice, may not get to Carnegie hall but your local KA&L club will love whatever you do to add merriment to our evening!

A New Year – Geek Night

Our very own in-house geek(alias): Carolyn the Prez – shared the wealth of knowledge and experience of social media, web sites and everything arts online.

Patiently waiting...

Patiently waiting…

There was so much to look at that we ran out of time before we ran out of information. Lots of questions and input from everyone gathered made for a lively evening….that everyone agreed should be January’s theme yearly….always lots of new stuff to learn!

We saved you a space but it got filled up ….. you’ll just have to be there next year (…or be square).

We looked at our own web site…where you are presently reading this, at Facebook where a number of our members have personal or business pages. Mail Chimp was opened up to show the members where their emails come from (it’s free!) and then we moved on to Etsy and Pinterest. These are all free to browse and the connections are fun and infinite.

Prez surfs.

Prez surfs.

Rick Revelle actually brought up Linkedin as he has had great success with his new book ‘I Am Algonquin’ via that platform….he has well over 400 followers (we checked!)

During a break John Lazarus led us to his daughter’s theatre costume design site….and the night progressed with camaraderie.

Jan 14 4

…there was a lot of note taking at this table!
